Manchester United’s final game of the 2015/16 Premier League season was abandoned on Sunday after security concerns that had previously forced two stands to be evacuated. The game had been scheduled to start at 3pm (GMT).
No immediate explanation had been giving following the evacuation, only that the stadium was experiencing a “code red” security threat.
The game was rescheduled for the following Tuesday but then, in a somewhat surprising twist, local police revealed that the bomb in question was actually a device left there as part of a training exercise for bomb-sniffing dogs.
According to the club’s official website:
“Following today’s controlled explosion, we have since found out that the item was a training device which had accidentally been left by a private company following a training exercise involving explosive search dogs.
“Whilst this item did not turn out to be a viable explosive, on appearance this device was as real as could be, and the decision to evacuate the stadium was the right thing to do, until we could be sure that people were not at risk.”
