Death at the 49er’s New Home

49ers fans complain of ‘unbearable’ heat at Levi’s Stadium amid fan’s death By Mike Rosenberg mrosenberg@mercurynews.com Posted: 08/18/2014 SANTA CLARA — The death of a 49ers fan at Levi’s Stadium and the huge crowds who abandoned the sunny seats for shady concourses are shining a bright light on an issue that many Niner faithful were unprepared for Sunday: the heat. It’s no secret Santa Clara is hotter than San Francisco, but the 49ers have also traded in the bayside fog and breezes that often cooled down Candlestick Park for the beaming Santa Clara Valley sun that glistens off the new stadium’s gleaming glass suite tower. Many of the 68,000 seasoned fans who attended the first 49ers game in Santa Clara, a preseason contest on Sunday afternoon, wound up with over-heated cellphones, sweat-drenched jerseys and an uncomfortable souvenir. “I came home super sun burnt,” said Gabe Hernandez, a 30-year-old fan from Roseville. “Me and my friend only lasted one quarter until she tapped out to get out of the beaming sun. I miss the ‘Stick.” Joanne McPhee, a season ticket holder for two decades, is used to hot conditions — she lives in Morgan Hill. But she said “the sun was Keep Reading

As incidents rise, does concert safety need another look?

(I give no credibility to any remarks made by Mr. Wertheimer below as they are not backed by any scientific study that could be published in a peer review journal) Patrick Ryan, USA TODAY 8:06 p.m. EDT August 5, 2014 The good times have gone bad quickly at a number of music shows this summer. A man had his fingertip bitten off at Beyoncé and Jay Z’s On the Run tour stop in Pasadena, Calif., last Saturday when he accused another concertgoer of groping his girlfriend, becoming the latest victim in a growing list of bizarre and tragic incidents to occur at live music events this summer. An 18-year-old man was charged with raping a 17-year-old girl in the middle of a crowded lawn at Keith Urban’s July 26 outdoor concert in Mansfield, Mass., while fellow country star Tim McGraw caught flak a week earlier for slapping a fan after she grabbed and ripped his jeans during an Atlanta show. Last weekend, two people died at Mad Decent Block Party, an EDM event, in Columbia, Md., joining 15 other fatalities at music festivals so far this year — up from seven drug-related fest deaths in 2013, according to Billboard. Police charge man with raping woman at raucous Massachusetts concert

Reuters- By Elizabeth Barber 7/30/2014 BOSTON (Reuters) – Prosecutors have charged a Massachusetts man with raping a woman at a raucous country music concert south of Boston on Saturday where dozens of people received treatment for alcohol-related medical problems. Police in Mansfield, Massachusetts, the site of the concert by Australian singer Keith Urban, charged Sean Murphy, 18, with raping a woman on the outdoor venue’s lawn during the performance while dozens of concert-goers looked on, some taking photos of the incident. Murphy on Tuesday pleaded not guilty and his attorney said on Wednesday that the incident was ill-advised but consensual. “This was a consensual act, not a sexual assault. There are no allegations of force or violence against him,” attorney Neil Crowley said in a statement. “Mr. Murphy deeply regrets this incident and I am sure the young woman does as well.” Police in Mansfield, about 25 miles (40 km) south of Boston, said in a statement that a female witness “pushed Murphy off the victim” and a male witness reported the incident to a police officer. Murphy was arrested at the venue, police said. Some 22 concert-goers were taken to hospitals during the show and about 50 people were Keep Reading

Nazi sympathizer invades pitch during Ghana-Germany game

Nazi sympathizer invades pitch during Ghana-Germany game By Graham Watson 6/21/14 RIO DE JANEIRO — FIFA’s plea to eliminate racism at this year’s World Cup continues to fall on deaf ears. Despite a vehement campaign from the organization and pleas and public service announcements from teams and players, it has been one of the overriding themes of the 2014 World Cup. The anti-discrimination Fare network, which made reports to FIFA about the matter on Thursday, noted that there were several neo-Nazi signs at matches involving Russia and Croatia. And on Saturday, it took center stage again when a Nazi sympathizer rushed the field during the Ghana-Germany game. No security attempted to stop him as he took his shirt off to reveal a pro-Nazi message. He had to be ushered off the field by Ghana midfielder Sulley Muntari. http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/soccer-dirty-tackle/nazi-sympathizer-invades-pitch-during-ghana-germany-game-235011679.html

Odessa deaths: a savage collision of hooliganism and politics

By Michel Moutot 5/4/14 Odessa (Ukraine) (AFP) – The deaths of 42 people in Odessa that greatly added to the toll of Ukraine’s crisis had their roots not only in the country’s worsening political confrontation but also rampant football hooliganism. Supporters of Odessa’s home team, the Chornomorets, joined up with those of the visiting Metalist side, from Ukraine’s northeast city of Kharkiv, to head to the game together. Originally there were no plans to have the 1,500-strong march turn into what it became: a rally calling for Ukrainian unity. But that’s what happened. “It was some of the young supporters — and in this Keep Reading

Bob Arum: Stampede after Mayweather-Maidana was ‘an accident ready to happen’

By Martin Rogers, 5/4/14- Yahoo Sports LAS VEGAS – Boxing promoter Bob Arum says the main exit from the MGM Grand Garden Arena was “an accident ready to happen” in the aftermath of a crowd stampede that injured approximately 60 fans following Saturday’s championship bout between Floyd Mayweather and Marcos Maidana. A fan is stretchered away from the MGM Grand Garden Arena after a violent stampede broke out. (Yahoo Sports) Arum, who has promoted many high-profile fights at the venue, spoke out in the wake of what witnesses described as a “terrifying” situation that left many fearing for their lives and 24 being sent to hospital – including a six-year-old boy and several elderly women. “When you jam thousands of people into a building and have, in effect, one real exit which is relatively narrow space you are looking for trouble,” Arum said in a telephone interview with Yahoo Sports. “While nothing really happened over the years it was inevitable to me that something would happen. Not to be naïve but the egress from that arena was always an accident ready to happen.” Boxing fans and members of the media have long been frustrated by the packed and slow-moving conditions Keep Reading
