NYPD: Super Bowl Security Will Be High-Tech And Unprecedented
MetLife Stadium And Midtown Will Be Under Intense Anti-Terror Initiatives

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — You’ve seen it before and you’ll see it again during Super Bowl week.
The NYPD is amassing its amazing arsenal of security initiatives to make sure the only bullets fired when the NFL comes to town are by the quarterbacks on the football field, CBS 2’s Marcia Kramer reported Tuesday.
“Parking at MetLife Stadium will be strictly limited and so the NFL is discouraging fans from driving to the game. Anyone who plans to drive to the game will have to purchase a parking permit in advance,” said NYPD Counter Terrorism Bureau Inspector John O’Connell said.
By game time the NYPD will have had a full complement of security measures in place for a week, including: police helicopters with special sensors to detect radiation on the ground, a counter terrorism 360-degree camera car to look for suspicious packages, bomb dogs, video cameras mounted as the NYPD’s “eyes in the sky” at various event locations, lots of radiation detection boats in addition to the usual complement of heavily armed cops.
“The biggest Super Bowl event will be Super Bowl Boulevard, a football-oriented urban theme park that will feature dozens of NFL and sponsor attractions, including viewing areas, a concert stage and a signature event, the toboggan run,” O’Connell said.
Times Square will be on lockdown. Starting at midnight on Jan. 26 through Feb. 1, Broadway from 33d Street to 48th Street will be closed to vehicles. In addition, 41st Street will be closed from 9 a.m. to midnight
Boulevard attractions will be open from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. from Jan. 29 to Feb. 1.
And there will be many other events throughout the week, including a media party on Super Bowl Monday.
“The party will be followed by fireworks on the Hudson River, which could affect traffic on the West Side Highway,” O’Connell said.
The NYPD said that there will be a number of middle-sized and large events, including an owners’ party and an NFL party at the Museum of Natural History.
The event is expected to attract as many as 150,000 visitors to the New York-New Jersey area.
The NYPD said that due to the nature of the events it can’t promise that businesses will not be affected.
